HAVING AN ENCOUNTER WITH THE MOST HIGH

BIBLE READING: GENESIS 14:18-20; PSALM 7:17; LUKE 1:26-38

“And the Angel answered and said unto her “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the Power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that Holy Thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35 (KJV)

There is simply no one like our God. He stands alone, in a Class all by Himself, and one of the Most Powerful Ways we come to understand Who He really is comes through His Names. In the Holy Bible, a name wasn’t just a label; it revealed Character, Nature and Authority. The Names of God reveal Layers of His Greatness that can fill our hearts with Awe for a lifetime.

The psalmist wrote that God has magnified His Word above all His Name, (Ps. 138:2) meaning His Very Character is wrapped up in Who He has revealed Himself to be. One of those Sacred Names is El Elyon, a Hebrew title that translates simply as “the Most High God.”

Think about that title for a moment: “Most High” isn’t just a casual description. It’s a Declaration that there is no measuring stick long enough to reach where He sits. Every superlative we can imagine: Highest, Greatest, Strongest, Mightiest—falls infinitely short of Who He actually is. He isn’t just the Highest among many; He is in a Category of His Own. There is no runner-up, no second place, no rival throne that can stand anywhere near His.

This Truth played out in dramatic fashion when God led His people out of Egypt. Before the Exodus, God passed through the land and executed Divine Judgment not just on the Egyptians but also on their gods (Exo. 12:12). Why could He do that? Simply because He could. There was no contest. The gods of Egypt, carved from stone and wood, worshipped by a mighty empire were nothing before the living God. They weren’t on His level. They couldn’t be, no matter how devoutly people bowed to them.

It’s important to understand something here. You might have heard the phrase “the Highest” used in reference to God, like when the Angel Gabriel told Mary that her Son would be called the Son of the Highest (Lk. 1:32, 35). That word “Highest” in the Greek is hupsistos, and it carries the same weight as El Elyon; it means “Most High.”

This distinction matters because calling God “the Highest” could mistakenly imply that there are others who are just slightly lower, that He is simply First among equals. But that’s not the Truth of the Holy Scriptures. God isn’t primus inter pares—first among peers—because He has no peers. He has no equals. He simply is the Most High, and there is none above Him and none beside Him.

The Philistines learned this lesson the hard way. After a devastating battle, they had captured the Ark of God, the Sacred Chest that represented God’s Presence among Israel. They hauled it back to Ashdod as a Trophy of war and placed it inside the temple of their god Dagon, right next to the idol itself, as if to say, “Our god has conquered Israel’s God.” But the next morning, they walked in to find Dagon flat on his face before the Ark of the Lord (1 Sam. 5:1-4). They picked him up and set him back in place, probably shaking their heads in confusion.

But the next morning, Dagon was not only on the ground again; this time his head and hands were cut off, lying on the threshold. The Message was undeniable and humiliating: the God of Israel bows to no one. Every knee will bow before Him, whether willingly or by force. The Philistines had to learn what Heaven already knew: there is none higher than the Most High.

And this El Elyon, this Most High God, is the Same God who watches over your life today. He hasn’t changed. His Power hasn’t diminished one bit. His Position hasn’t shifted. He still sits far above every Earthly Authority, every Spiritual Force, every problem that looms large in your life. Nothing towers over Him. Nothing threatens His Throne. Nothing surprises Him or overwhelms Him. He is El Elyon, the Most High God, and He invites you to trust Him completely.

So, let every worry shrink in the Light of His Majesty. Let every fear dissolve in the Presence of His Power. Let every voice that speaks against His Truth fall silent before the Reality of who He is. Our God is High and lifted up, and His Glory fills the Earth. There is no one like Him. There never has been, and there never will be.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, El Elyon, Most High God, we bow before You in Wonder and Worship. There is no one like You. No power in Heaven or on Earth can compare with You. No enemy can stand before You.

No problem is too big for You to handle. We magnify Your Holy Name and declare that You alone are Worthy of all Glory, Honour and Praise. Thank You for being the God Who reigns above all things and Who watches over our lives with Love and Power. O Lord, please help us to live today with the Confidence that comes from knowing we belong to You in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
